Listening: The Intention to Understand, Not Waiting to Speak

The Five Types of Listening…

1. Active listening

A concept developed from the works of Carl Rogers.

This exchange technique involves using questioning and paraphrasing to ensure that one has understood the message.

2. Empathetic listening

Empathetic listening is a posture that goes beyond what is explicitly said to capture the emotional signals of the Other and make sense of them.

One must be fully present to oneself as well as to the Other.

3.Whole listening

While empathetic listening involves trying to put oneself in the Other's shoes and understand what they feel, whole listening ensures the Other of one's exclusive attention and shows them signs of it. This kind of listening builds trust.

4. Systemic listening

Beyond the information conveyed by the Other, systemic listening involves considering all contextual data to understand their frame of reference, beliefs, and factors that may affect their reasoning... It's a "deep" form of listening.

5. Enriched listening

Enriched listening, or communicator listening, engages all four previous levels of listening. It is also a dynamic form of listening aimed at eliciting meaning and direction. It requires distinguishing important information from background noise.
