Mapping of an Indigenous Community

The structure of an Indigenous community is presented here through the example of the Kanienkehaka community of Kahnawá:ke. This mapping provides a general description of the roles of various main organizations that operate within most Indigenous communities. The objective of this tool is to assist non-Indigenous collaborators in better understanding the organization of an Indigenous community, directing inquiries to the appropriate individuals, and avoiding excessive reliance on these organizations.

If a request does not seem to align with the defined roles of the organizations approached, it may be that the response to the request has already been documented in this toolkit or other resources. The request may also need clarification. It is advisable to conduct research on this matter before contacting organizations within Indigenous communities.
